Description
An Attempted assault—School
commencement—Other Matters,
Americus. Ga.. June B.—A brutal attempt
at criminal assault, which might have resulted in a lynching, is reported. Yester
day the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. John
Peny. a imminent farmer of Summer
county, while picking plums in her father's orchard, was assaulted by a negro.
The child struggled and freed herself.
Whereupon the negro ran from the orchard. He was captured by a party of
farmers last night and safely landed in
the Americus jail this morning. The
prisoner. Elbert Trice, denies the crime,
though he is undoubtedly the right negro.
Superior Court is in session here now and
the negro will be given a speedy trial
