Description
HEAVY FINES FOR 4 NEGROES
As an outgrowth of trouble between Police Officer Andrew Devenney and a number of Negroes yesterday afternoon, that had the aspect for a time of a small sized riot, two Negroes and two Negresses were heavily fined this morning by Judge Hastings in Municipal Court.
Louise Bailey, Negress, over who the trouble began, and Hynson Johnson, Negro, who tried to knock the officer’s feet from beneath him, were each fined $50 and costs, with the alternative of three months in the workhouse for assault and battery.
In addition, Lousie was fined $50 and costs on a charge of disorderly conduct, and Josephine Jackson, Negress, was fined $50 and costs, and Alonzo Monk, Negro, was fined $10 and costs, on charges of disorderly conduct.
The officer stated that he at first did not propose to arrest the Negroes for their disorderly actions at Front and Washington streets, after some trouble with a white woman, but only advised them “to get in and keep quiet.” They failed to heed his warning, however, and the trouble started. He took hold of the Bailey woman and then Josephine Jackson interfered with him and Hynson Johnson tried to take his club from him and knock his feet from under him.
The crowd then started to storm him and he had to draw his revolver to frighten them in their attack until the arrival of the patrol wagon.
Officer Devenney stated that it was the third time that Josphine Jackson had attempted to interfere with him while he was making an arrest.
