Description
HELD IN HEAVY BAIL
William Taylor, colored, was charged with committing an assault and battery upon Mary Smith, colored of No. 231 Adams Street. Mary testified that Taylor boarded with her, and that he went home intoxicated last night and began quarreling with her because she had not put up his dinner in a kettle to carry with him to work today. He dragged her out of bed and abused her, whereupon Mary’s son, Thomas, interfered.
Taylor then turned upon Thomas and, pointing a revolver at him, threatened to shoot if he made any interference. Thomas, however, wrenched the pistol from Taylor’s hand, whereupon the latter pulled off his shoe and attacked Smith with it. He later escaped with but one shoe on and was arrested by Officer Payne.
Carrie Smith and Julia Burton, colored, testified to having seen Taylor load the revolver and the Burton girl stated she, in company with Carrie Smith, Taylor and another man, had gone to a restaurant early in the evening and had some oysters, and that when she attempted to leave Taylor pointed the gun at her and demanded that she halt. She did so.
The original charge against the prisoner was changed by the court and one of assault and battery and pointing a revolver substituted. He was held in $500 bail for Court of General Sessions.
