AN EASTER HAT CAUSED TROUBLE AN EASTER HAT CAUSED TROUBLE
CLARA TRAVIS AND DAIVD AUGUSTUS, COLORED, HEAVILY FINED FOR ASSUALTING LIZZIE CUMMINS.
An Easter hat and a bottle of bluing were the cause of Clara Travis and David Augustus, both colored, being fined $25 and costs by Judge Ball today.
From the testimony produced at the hearing in City Court this morning, it developed that Lizzie Cummins, colored, had borrowed an Easter hat from the Travis woman, living at No. 702 Buttonwood Street, this city. As yesterday was the day when new headgear and clothing are usually displayed, Clara desired her Spring hat to wear, and sent a message to Lizzie to return it.
STRUCK WITH A BOTTLE
This Lizzie refused to do, claiming that Clara had given it to her. She later called at the Travis woman’s room in order to have her explain what she meant by demanding the return of the hat. After being admitted Lizzie stated that the door was locked behind her, preventing her from getting out, and that Clara and David Augustus, who was also in the apartment, assaulted her, the Travis woman striking her over the head with a bottle of bluing, inflicting a cut on the scalp.
Clara admitted striking the woman but said that she did it in self-defense. She also said that David took no part in the fight other than to separate the women, which statement David corroborated. Judge Ball imposed the above fine.

CHARGED WITH ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO KILL
Cambridge, Md., March 16. —George Foster and Moses Burk, colored, were brought to Cambridge last night, tied, and lodged in jail under a charge of assault with intent to kill before Justice Benson. Foster is from Crisfield and Burk from Philadelphia.
They were employed as dredge hands on the bugeye Addie H. Shores and had been on the boat for some time. James E. Pritchet was master of the boat and was at work in Brannock’s bay eight miles from Cambridge. During Captain Pritchet’s temporary absence these men became offended at Otto Wingate, a white boy, 19 years old, who was aboard, and assaulted him viciously and were about to throw the lad overboard when assistance came. They cursed violently and declared they meant to take charge of the boat.

RUN DOWN BY BLOODHOUND RUN DOWN BY BLOODHOUND
NEGRO FUGITIVE CAUGHT AFTER A YEAR’S EVASION OF THE LAW.
Centreville, Md. March 8.—Lawrence Henry, a negro about 25 years of age, who is under indictment charged with assault with intent to kill ex-Clerk of the Circuit Court William H. Cecil, was captured near Goldsborough, Caroline County, by Constable Saunders, of that place, assisted by his brother.
The alleged assault was committed about a year ago but Henry had successfully eluded the officers of this and Caroline counties. Deputy Sheriff T. Frank Seward learned of his whereabouts a few days ago and arranged with Officer Saunders for his apprehension. On Tuesday the Saunders brothers went to the locality where they knew Henry was at work, accompanied by a half-bred bloodhound. As soon as Henry saw the men approaching, he made a break for the woods. The dog was set upon him and he was compelled to run into a pond of water to escape an attack from the beast.
Henry willingly surrendered when the dog was called off and he was delivered to Deputy Seward, at Bridgetown. Mr. Seward brought him to Centreville and put him in jail, where he will await trial at the May term of court. He is wanted for several other charges.

HELD IN HEAVY BAIL HELD IN HEAVY BAIL
William Taylor, colored, was charged with committing an assault and battery upon Mary Smith, colored of No. 231 Adams Street. Mary testified that Taylor boarded with her, and that he went home intoxicated last night and began quarreling with her because she had not put up his dinner in a kettle to carry with him to work today. He dragged her out of bed and abused her, whereupon Mary’s son, Thomas, interfered.
Taylor then turned upon Thomas and, pointing a revolver at him, threatened to shoot if he made any interference. Thomas, however, wrenched the pistol from Taylor’s hand, whereupon the latter pulled off his shoe and attacked Smith with it. He later escaped with but one shoe on and was arrested by Officer Payne.
Carrie Smith and Julia Burton, colored, testified to having seen Taylor load the revolver and the Burton girl stated she, in company with Carrie Smith, Taylor and another man, had gone to a restaurant early in the evening and had some oysters, and that when she attempted to leave Taylor pointed the gun at her and demanded that she halt. She did so.
The original charge against the prisoner was changed by the court and one of assault and battery and pointing a revolver substituted. He was held in $500 bail for Court of General Sessions.

TWENTY-FIVE AND COSTS TWENTY-FIVE AND COSTS
Peter Pessario, an Italian, living near Sixth and Hawley streets, was arrested last night by Officer John Long on a charge of assaulting Michael Johnjakaki. From the evidence produced this morning, it seems that Peter became involved in trouble over a bottle of whiskey, the result of the altercation being that Michael received a cut on the right cheek and a gash on the right wrist.
When Officer Long’s attention was called to the fray, he found Peter hiding in a cellar next door to the house where the fight occurred and arrested him. A fine of $25 and costs was imposed. When Pessario was arrested a genuine Italian stiletto was found in his pocket.

WHAT HAPPENED TO JONES WHAT HAPPENED TO JONES
John Brown, colored, was charged with committing as assault and battery upon Harry Jones, also colored, of No. 134 Townsend Street. Jones testified that Brown formerly boarded with him, but left owing him a bill of $15, for which he attached his wages. Yesterday as he was about to enter his house Brown accosted him, and, after a few words, struck him in the face, knocking his hat off. As he stooped to pick it up Brown made an attempt to draw a razor. Mrs. Jones corroborated her husband’s testimony, but Brown denied striking Jones and stated that he was intoxicated and his hat fell off. Two witnesses testified likewise. The costs of the case, amounting to $5.85, were imposed.

ASSAULTED HIS WIFE ASSAULTED HIS WIFE
Dennis O’Connor was charged before the court with assaulting his wife, Lucy. Officer Frank Kane testified that late yesterday afternoon while patrolling his beat his attention was attracted by a woman calling “police, police,” in Eighth Street Park. Hurrying to the scene Officer Kane found O’Connor grasping his wife tightly about the wrist, while she screamed for help. Upon his arrival the woman at once appealed to him to protect her, saying that she was afraid her husband would kill her. The officer brought both parties to the police station where Mrs. O’Conner preferred a charge of assault and battery against her husband and he was locked up.
FOLLOWED HER HUSBAND
Mrs. O’Connor stated that last night, as she was going to a drug store, she noticed her husband sitting in the basement of the house Eighth and Rodney streets, occupied by the Reed family.
She went into the basement and found him and Howard Reed drinking beer together. After a few words she departed, followed by her husband. After they had gone some distance, she alleged that her husband struck her and kicked her in the side several times. He led her to Eighth Street Park, where she called for help. Ins answer to a question from O’Connor Mrs. O’Connor admitted that she drank a glass of beer at Reed’s house, but only after he had insisted that she should take it. She denied that Reed had told her to leave.
“THE OLD MAN”
Horace Reed knew nothing of the occurrence, beyond the fact that he and O’Connor were in the basement of his residence drinking beer, when Mrs. O’Connor came in. She also took a glass of beer. He admitted that he had said to the woman: “For God’s sake, Lucy, don’t let the ‘old man’ catch you here. You’d better go out.” She did so and O’Connor followed her.
The defendant declined to make any statement, beyond denying striking his wife. He said he and Reed had quarreled on account of his wife, but he did not care to discuss the matter. A fine of $20 and costs was imposed. Mr. and Mrs. O’Connor have not lived together for some time.

New Castel, April 28. --- At the request of Mayor Evan G. Boyd, John Hall, colored, contributed $3.20 to the finances of the city last evening.
John was charged with committing an assault and battery upon Joseph Hood, also colored, the trouble originating because Hood had struck one of Hall’s children. When Hall arrived home from work, he was told of the occurrence, and at once proceeded to administer punishment to Hood. The latter claimed that Hall cut him on the neck, but as no weapon was found upon him when Officer Matthew Tobin took him custody, the charge could not be sustained.

DRUG CLERK FRUSTRATES SAFE ROBBERY; BEATEN DRUG CLERK FRUSTRATES SAFE ROBBERY; BEATEN
Ross Geisbert, a clerk in the drug store of Dr. Henry S. Willis at Eighth and Monroe streets was assaulted by two men last night who had been frustrated in their attempts to rob the safe back of the prescription counter in the store.
The men were first noticed by Mr. Geisbert when they entered the store about 9.30 o’clock and requested permission to use the telephone back of the soda fountain. A third man stood on the steps, evidently for the purpose of giving an alarm in the event of a policeman appearing on the scene. The man at the telephone was in plain view of several people in the store, but his companion disappeared back of the prescription counter.
Mr. Geisbert’s suspicions were aroused and he went back to investigate and found the man standing by the safe, which had been opened. He insisted on the men leaving the store. They protested and as there were several persons in the store at the time Mr. Geisbert stepped outside to find an officer. He was followed by the men who attacked him without warning. One struck him on the back of the head with some blunt instrument, while the other man struck him in the face with something resembling steel knuckles. Though retaining consciousness, Mr. Geisbert was in a dazed condition as the result of the blows and was brutally beaten before those in the store were aware of what was taking place. Bleeding from an ugly cut across the top of his nose, his eyes blackened and bruised and the back of his head one huge welt, Mr. Geisbert was taken into the store and treated while someone summoned the police. So far no arrested have been made but the officers believe they know the men guilty of the attack and expect to make some arrested this afternoon.
Mr. Geisbert is unable to explain the attack. He said that while he had ordered the men from the store he had molested them in no way, and thinks that the attack was due solely to their anger at being detected tampering with the safe.
At this same corner on the previous night and unknown man was held up by several men and beaten, being left on the sidewalk in an unconscious condition. His name could not be learned as he was shortly afterward taken away by friends. E. S. Wise, 803 Madison street said this morning that these lawless attacks are a famous nightly occurrence in the locality and is anxious that the police take come action in the matter.
A gang of young men raided the pool room of Carmine Rensi, Eighth and Madison streets, last night, breaking the windows and doing considerable damage inside by throwing bricks at those in the room.
