Of the 40 cases of assault reported in the Morning Journal and Courier in both 1880 and 1900, 20% were from out of state. This was consistent between the time frames, with four out-of-state stories each. The remaining 80% came from in-state, especially New Haven and other close by towns.
Out-of-state stories were rare and the ones that did appear were sensationalized. For example, a racial lynching incident in Baltimore occurred. Another case out of state was in Chicago Illinois where an interesting robbery took place. In comparison, local stories were more common like the domestic violence committed in Fair Haven in 1880, where one man was arrested for assault and battery on his wife. This seems to have been a common crime during the 1880s because 40% of my cases during this time were domestic assaults. With this split of in and out-of-state cases, we can conclude that while the paper did report some peculiar cases from other places it tended to be made up of regular crimes committed in the area.
