Description
BOLD ATTACK AT FLORIDA GROVE. Woman Complains of an Assault – Struck Man in the Face and He Ran. Mrs. Richards, who lives at Florida Grove, says she was attacked by a man Monday afternoon. She was alone at the time and she had gone out to the woodpile. As she started to fill her arms with wood, a man came up the bank from the river. He was half drunk, she says, and demanded beer. When he was told the beer selling days of Florida Grove were over, he seized the woman by the throat, according to her statement and began choking her. Mrs. RIchards is an invalid but she had strength enough to strike out with a stick of wood which she held in her hand. The blow landed across the man’s face and blood flowed. The man, finding things going against him, ran, and Mrs. Richards returned to the house. She is suffering from the shock. Detective Huff investigated, but the man left no clues and it is not likely that he will be caught. Since the old Florida Grove has been closed the place has not been frequented. The Richards family lives in the house as a caretaker. The spot is lonely and well adapted to assault without fear of arrest.
