Description
The New York Tribune publishes the following dispatch from Long Beach Charles Wallace, aged twenty-two, a son of the Rev. Dr. A. Wallace, editor of the Ocean Grove Record, came to the Branch on Saturday evening and took a room at the Arcade Hotel. He rose late Monday morning, and after breakfast strolled down to the beach. Returning at about 10 o'clock, he ascended to his room, on the second floor, and shortly after went out again. He had not been gone long when the house keeper of the Arcade, Mrs. M. C. Lloyd, missed her watch and chain which she had left in her room. They were valued at $1150. Suspicion rested at once upon young Wallace, and the police were requested to arrest him. Search was made for him and continued until evening, but without success. A few minutes before the evening boat left the pier John Milan, an employee of the Arcade, went on board and discovered Wallace. He charged him with stealing the watch. “Let go of me,” said Wallace, “I know nothing of your watch.” At that moment the chain of the watch dropped from his trousers leg upon the deck. Officer Fuller, stooping down, took hold of the chain, and from the young man’s gaiter he drew the watch attached to it. When taken before Justice Lane, at the
police court, he admitted the theft, and said he had nothing to plead in extenuation of his conduct. His highly-respectable connections make the case of unusual Interest, and much sympathy is felt for the parents of the wayward youth. Wallace was committed to the county jail.
