Mr. Mar Black, who lives in a shack
in Almena just west of the Kalamazoo
and Van Buren County line, was at
tacked by her son-in la, Raph Whipple,
as she lay asleep last Saturday
night. With one band on the throat of
his mother-in-law and grasping a large
bladed jack knife in the other Whipple
made repeated threats upon her life.
Whipple and his wife had some difference
of opinion and separated, Mrs.
Whipple going to Kalamazoo where she
found employment and he followed his
chosen profession, that of horse trading
Whipple lay his grievances at the
door of his mother-in-law, and his desire
for revenge was too strong for
him and Saturday night, thinking Mrs.
Black was alone, drove to the shack, removed
his shoes and prepared for his
fiendish act. He gained admittance to
the house by pulling off a board and
went to the cot of Mrs. Black, where
the above tragedy was enacted. In an
effort to free herself she was slashed
across the left hand, leaving a deep,
ugly wound. Her screams awakened
her grandson, who went to her aid.
Whipple became frightened by his appearance,
ran to the road, got into a rig
and made for Paw Paw. He went to
the home of Mr. Flanders, who lives in
the eastern part of the village, calling
on him at 2a. m. From there he came
to the camp of the "horse traders"
about miles southwest of town.
At 1 o'clock Sunday, Sheriff Beattie located
him and brought him to Jail,
Whipple is a man of years
weighs 150 pounds and claims
Mich as his home.
Those who were in the house
time the assault was made were William Black,
a grandson, and Bert Manley,
who are witnesses against him.
Monday morning Whipple appeared
before Judge Rowland and waived ex
amination to the charge of attempted
murder and his bail was placed at
$1500. He is in jail awaiting trial in circuit court.
