Description
$50,000 FIRE LOSS IN BUSINESS DISTRICT AT YORK
District at York
York, Neb., Feb. 15.óSeven fires
Within two hours hero tonight,
leads local authorities 'to believe
that a fire ìfiend" had ìit in for
the town." At 10 p. m. the Cain
block on Lincoln avenue was on
lire. Tiie fire was confined to the
roof and upper floor. The fire
Started between the roof and the
celling. At midnight, the fire was
Ktili burning, but had been con
fined to this one building,
k Gould Northrup, notions, the
nilympin candy kitchen and Dean
Co., wall paper and paints, had
shops in this building. Most of
their stock was carried out. The
building, however, is practically
ruined by water and fire and will
have to be remodeled before it can
be used. Firemen cut the roof
down in order to reach the blaze.
The loss was roughly estimated in
the evening at $50,000.
At 11 p. m. a brisk blaze started
in the Woods block on the west
side of (he main business square.
This was quickly quenched before
much damage had been done.
About the same time a fire was
discovered in the teu-cent store.
Little damage was done. Two
fires, one on the second and one on
the third floor of the First Na
tional bank were extinguished be
fore they gained much headway.
A vacant store building, soon to
be occupied by another ten-cent
i tf'ore, was the scene of still an
plher 'blaze, which was confined
to small limits. A fire in the Com
mercial club was drowned out be
fore it did any great damage. A
fire "plantî was discovered in the
auditorium before it had been
touched off. Oiled rags and oil
sprinkled on the floor are held as
mute evidence of the work of a
ìfirebug.î
Local police are working on the
case, but have made no arrests.
Who should want to burn up the
city is a question which will take
some time to discover. Tuesday
night the local high school was
burned with a loss of $00,000. The
water pressure was low then and
the firemen found it almost impossible to cope with the flames. To
night high pressure was of great
assistance in the quick and early
stopping of the fireís racagcs.
