Description
WOMAN BOUND, ASSAULTED BY BRUTAL NEGRO
Mrs. Emma Talley, of Blackbird Hundred, Beaten Into Unconsciousness
IDENTIFIES THOMAS AS HER ASSAILANT
Accused of felonious assault on a white woman, Ernest Thomas, a Negro, aged 21 years, was brought to this city late yesterday afternoon by Chief of Police Lee Cochran, of Smyrna, and was locked up at the police station for safe keeping.
It was feared that farmers of near Clayton might attempt to lynch him, following his alleged attack on Mrs. Emma Talley, aged 58, of Dexter's Corner, Blackbird hundred, near the Kent County line. Thomas claims he is innocent of the charge preferred by Mrs. Talley, who, however, identified him as her assailant.
She had been beaten into unconsciousness by a Negro as was old in these columns yesterday, who then further assaulted her as she lay insensible in her home. Her condition is reported as serious.
Chief of Police Cochran, in the face
of mutterings and rapidly inflaming feeling against Thomas, who is a Virginia Negro, decided to remove him.
