DRUG CLERK FRUSTRATES SAFE ROBBERY; BEATEN
Ross Geisbert, a clerk in the drug store of Dr. Henry S. Willis at Eighth and Monroe streets was assaulted by two men last night who had been frustrated in their attempts to rob the safe back of the prescription counter in the store.
The men were first noticed by Mr. Geisbert when they entered the store about 9.30 o’clock and requested permission to use the telephone back of the soda fountain. A third man stood on the steps, evidently for the purpose of giving an alarm in the event of a policeman appearing on the scene. The man at the telephone was in plain view of several people in the store, but his companion disappeared back of the prescription counter.
Mr. Geisbert’s suspicions were aroused and he went back to investigate and found the man standing by the safe, which had been opened. He insisted on the men leaving the store. They protested and as there were several persons in the store at the time Mr. Geisbert stepped outside to find an officer. He was followed by the men who attacked him without warning. One struck him on the back of the head with some blunt instrument, while the other man struck him in the face with something resembling steel knuckles. Though retaining consciousness, Mr. Geisbert was in a dazed condition as the result of the blows and was brutally beaten before those in the store were aware of what was taking place. Bleeding from an ugly cut across the top of his nose, his eyes blackened and bruised and the back of his head one huge welt, Mr. Geisbert was taken into the store and treated while someone summoned the police. So far no arrested have been made but the officers believe they know the men guilty of the attack and expect to make some arrested this afternoon.
Mr. Geisbert is unable to explain the attack. He said that while he had ordered the men from the store he had molested them in no way, and thinks that the attack was due solely to their anger at being detected tampering with the safe.
At this same corner on the previous night and unknown man was held up by several men and beaten, being left on the sidewalk in an unconscious condition. His name could not be learned as he was shortly afterward taken away by friends. E. S. Wise, 803 Madison street said this morning that these lawless attacks are a famous nightly occurrence in the locality and is anxious that the police take come action in the matter.
A gang of young men raided the pool room of Carmine Rensi, Eighth and Madison streets, last night, breaking the windows and doing considerable damage inside by throwing bricks at those in the room.
