The result of an occurrence on New Brunswick avenue. South of the auditorium shortly after 1 o’clock yesterday morning. Robert Loft thirty two, police chauffeur of the Elizabeth police department, was arrested charged with the shooting and held in $1,000 bail for a hearing two weeks from tonight. Loft came to this city with detective Sergeant James A. Ward of 629 Franklin street, Elizabeth, to attend a dance here. About 1 o’clock they departed from the New Brunswick avenue auditorium and planned to take a taxicab to Elizabeth. They spoke to a representative of the sneath Taxi Company and it is said $7 was asked to take Ward, Loft and a third man to Elizabeth. Ward and the third man got into the taxi, it is said, while Loft talked with Louis Sneath regarding the price., Zullo who it is said has no connection with the Sneath Taxi Company came along and entered into the discussion. ZUllo, it is believed attacked Loft and when Ward attempted to come to the assistance of his fellow officer he was struck and sent back into the cab. Zullo started from the scene and Loft who had pulled his 25 automatic revolver, fired once in the air. The Port Reading man failed to stop and Loft who was on the ground, hit him with the second shot and missed with a third. Zullo did not fall but yelled “Oh, I am shot” when the second shot found the mark on his left shoulder. Officers William Peterson and Hugh Steed were at the corner of State and Smith streets and hurried to the scene and succeeded in taking the revolver from Loft. Officer PEterson took Loft to the City Physician John V. Smith, where a cut on his lip was cared for the Elizabaeth officer was then booked at headquarters on an atrocious assault and battery charge. He was held until 8 o’clock in the morning and released by Chief Niels J. Tonnesen in $1,000 bail for a hearing last night. The bail was continued for two weeks by Recorder Harold E. Pickersgill last night. Zullo was taken to Dr. SMith’s office, then to Dr. Edward Klein and finally to the hospital. His condition is not serious. Reports that Zullo shoe-leathered loft and pulled a gun at the same time as the Elizabeth officer could not be verified. Ward and Sneath went to headquarters with Officer WIlliam Keating following the shooting, but were not held. The automatic used in the shooting was turned over to Sergeant John Larson by Officer Steed. Four stitches were in Loft’s hip by Dr. Smith. Detective Sergeant Ward has served on the Elizabeth force for about twenty years and Loft also has seen a number of years service. • BOATMAN IS SHOT IN FRONT ST. SALOON
BOATMAN IS SHOT IN FRONT ST. SALOON. John Hennessey of the Lehigh Valley Tug Ganoga is in the City Hospital with a Bullet Through His Right Lung—Charles J. Hathaway Arrested Charged with the Crime. John Hennessey, of the Lehigh Valley tugboat Ganoga, was shot in the right breast yesterday afternoon. Charles J. Hathaway, chief engineer on the same boat, is locked and accused of doing the shooting. The bullet went through Hennessey’s right lung and is now somewhere in his back. An effort will be made to remove it today. The shooting occurred in Fritz Speer’s saloon on Front street, about 4 o’clock. Officer William McDermott heard the shot and ran into the place as the bartender was coming out for help. He found Hennessey on a lounge in a side room where he had been helped after the assault. Hathway had fled from the saloon after firing and gone to the boat which was lying at Hall's dock. He had hidden himself in the lower hold and was found in his concealment by the officer who immediately arrested him. The two men. together with a third boatman, met outside of the saloon and entered together. They called for drinks and Hathaway and the other man are said to have drank theirs. An argument started and Hennessey struck Hathaway with his fist, it is alleged. Without any warning according to statement made the man jerked out a small thirty-two calibre revolver and shot. Hennessey fell to the floor. He was picked up and taken to a side room. Word was sent to police headquarters and Sergeant Dunham responded. Officer McDermott returned with his man. Hennessey identified him as the one firing the shot The wounded man bled but little. Dr. G. W. Fithian, who was called, examined the wound and had the man taken to the hospital. While his injury is very serious he may recover. When the officer arrested Hathway he is said to have admitted having committed the deed. This morning in court he refused to talk without consulting a lawyer. He is held. Bad blood has existed between the principals for some time according to the stories told. Hathaway was hired during the marine strike on the Val-i loy and considerable bad feeling has been held against him because he is known as a non-union engineer. Shortly after he was engaged, Hennessey was reduced from his position as pilot to deckhand. For this he claimed Hathaway was responsible and the two have had several clashes. The revolver was found this morning shortly before noon. It had five chambers, one of which was empty. Hathaway said he had thrown the weapon overboard. A search revealed it beneath some coal in one of the bunkers. The chief detective of the Lehigh Valley railroad, O. Lyden, ; and Superintendent of Tugboats, John T. Clark visited Hathaway in his cell at noon. After carefully investigating they found the case did not concern them, as it happened off the boat. This afternoon it was stated that the doctors did not think it advisable to attempt to remove the bullet today.

WANTED $16; SAYS HE WAS ASSAULTED. Henry Shapiro Claims he Went to Collect Bill and Received Abuse Instead. Henry Shapiro, a dry goods mer- chant at Smith and Oak street, this morning in the police court, swore out a complaint against Joseph Walenspiel, in which he charges the latter with assault and battery. According to Shapiro, Lie secured an order for $16 worth of goods from Mrs. Waltenspiel, who lives on the road between Woodbridge and Rahway. This was on Thursday and on Friday Shapiro went, as he declares, to collect the $16 from Mr. Waltenspiel. The men had an altercation over the payment of the bill and finally, Shapiro further alleges, Waltenspiel struck him several times in the back. A warrant for Waltenspiel was put in detective Peltier’s hands and he is expected to have his man in custody before tomorrow morning.

WOMAN ASSAULTED BY MAN WITH KNIFE; HAS BEEN ARRESTED. Police Summoned to North AMboy – Man Said to be Her Husband…Met Her in the Woods as She was Going to Work – Her Cries Scared him off and help Arrived – Said to have Bad Record…Is now Awaiting a Hearing. Mrs. John Takac, who lives in North Amboy, near the Woodbridge junction, was attacked in the woods between her home this morning while on her way to work in the local cigar factory. The assailant is said to be her husband and the police arrested him this morning. The woman was slashed in the face twice with a knife. She was carried to her home where she lies in a delirious condition. A telephone message from the railroad tower summoned the police to the scene. The woman , it is said, does not live with her husband. She started to work about 6 o’clock this morning and was met in a lonely place in the woods. The woman called for help when assaulted and this scared the man away. Some of her friends hurried to her assistance and she was taken back home. An effort was then made to get medical assistance. In the meantime the husband returned to the house and fearing that he would do more harm, the police were summoned. At the sight of them the husband fled. He was employed at the American Smelting and Refining Company’s plant and the police went there in the hope of getting him. The man was evidently watching them, for when they left the house, he returned. A News reporter found him there later, but he could not speak English and he refused to talk through an interpreter. From a woman who lived in the house it was learned that the man was supposed to be living with several different women that a few days before the one who was attacked took him to task. The prisoner is now held in the lockup awaiting a hearing. It is thought the woman’s injuries are not serious.
