Description
WOMAN IS SHOT, HUSBAND HELD Captain of Coal Barge Says Gun Went Off Accidentally, Striking Wife TOTTENVILLE. Feb. 28 – Nelson French, Fifty seven years old, captain of the coal barge Cora, lying in the cove off Rossville is being held by the police on a charge of felonious assault and his wife Eliza French, sixty years old, is at the Richmond Memorial hospital with a bullet wound in her left breast above the heart, which he says was accidentally done while he was showing a captain of another barge a thirty two calibre revolver last night. The shooting took place in the cabin of the coal barge about 8:20 o’clock last night and it was not until 11 o’clock, nearly three hours after that the police were notified of the occurrence. French, with his wife, came to the Tottenville police station about 11 o’clock and reported the shooting. Both declared that it was accidental. French told Detective Sergeant Schley of the EIght Branch Bureau. Who is making an investigation he was showing the gun to Captain Andrew Linn of the barge. Hatteras was lying alongside the barge Cora when it accidentally went off and the bullet entered the woman’s left breast and went out her back. In spite of the fact that both French and Linn say that it was accidental the former was locked up in the 65th precinct station. West New Brighton without bail on a charge of felonious assault and Linn will be used as a material witness when wanted. An ambulance was called from the hospital and Dr. Wilder rushed the woman to that institution where it was said this morning that she would recover. French will be arraigned in court today on the charge.
