The Language of Assault
Perth Amboy Evening News does not do a lot of interesting things when it comes to language. At least with stories pertaining to assault. As mentioned in the Newspaper description section, Perth Amboy Evening News leans heavily towards informational, often favoring facts over glamor. Details of crimes are often included, but the way in which they are conveyed is clinical and often aren’t indicative of what the author of each article may think about each crime. This might be do, at least in part, to the paper’s goal of avoiding “gossip”, or perhaps just the way in which the publishers of the paper wished to convey information. Another key factor could be proximity, as many of the reported crimes happened in and around Perth Amboy. Perth Amboy is not that big of a city, therefore perhaps the publishers wished to remain respectful in their reporting, especially cases which involved obvious victims.
