Type of Assault
Overall:
This pie chart gives us a glimpse into the kinds of situations that led to the assault cases reported in The True Northerner. This data was gathered by looking for specific words or phrases used in the newspaper articles.
Key Observations:
- Family: The word "Family" popped up most often, appearing in 5% of the cases. This suggests that a good number of the assaults involved family members or happened within the home.
- "Battery" and "Well-Known" are also common: We see "Battery" come up quite a bit, appearing both alone and in combination with other words. "Well-known" also shows up a few times, which indicates that some of these assaults involved people who were well-known in the community.
- Self-Defense: Interestingly, "Defended" appears a few times too, which suggests that some of these assaults were acts of self-defense whether it be within the court or the crime described.
Language: The True Northerner for most crimes that had connection with family had limited words to give compared to other crimes. In one article (below) it actually expressed more bias than usual when explaining the crime. Stating "What is freedom to a man when he can't beat his wife?"
