- Attack on Husband Fails, But She Is Held in Connection With Case - SALEM, Ore., May 8. - On the strength of a confession made by Jesse Mullinix, Mrs. Theo Steiger, wife of a prominent rancher who lives north of Salem, is under arrest today, charged with complicity in an assault on Steiger with intent to kill. Indictments charging Mullinix with assault with intent to kill and charging Mrs. Steiger with being an accomplice in the assault were returned [?] by the Marion county grand jury Friday afternoon. RECOGNIZES ASSAILANT DURING STRUGGLE. Steiger was shot in his own barnyard the night of March 25. During the shooting he grappled with his assailant, whom he recognized as Mullinix, a former employe, who had been discharged some time previously. Intimate relations between Mullinix and Mrs. Steiger were hinted at the time of the shooting as the cause of the discharge of Mullinix and the shooting which followed. In his confession, made to the police two days after the shooting, but which was not made public until today, Mullinix is said to have not only admitted the shooting, but to have confessed to illicit relations with Mrs. Steiger. Mullinix is a man of about 40 years of age and Mrs. Steiger is 62. In his confession to the grand jury Mullinix is said to have accused Mrs. Steiger of paying him $100 to kill her husband, with the understanding she would then marry him. Steiger is worth about $70,000. Steiger, who was shot three times and who was confined to a hospital for some time following the shooting, is now well on the road to recovery.
