- Description
- Sailors Have Been in Jail at Mazatlan Since Nov. 12 - WASHINGTON, Dec. 19.-(United Press.)- Two American sailors have been held in jail at Mazatian, Mexico, since November 12, on the charge of assaulting a Mexican citizen, the state department announced today. The American consul at Mazatian has attended to the case and has asked for a speedy trial for the men. The sailors are H. V. Leonard and H. O. Martin, the department said. They are from the submarine tender Pocomoke. President Wilson today was in full charge of the Mexican situation. Carranza's reply to the last United States note demanding W. O. Jenkins' release has been submitted to the executive, it was learned authoritatively. Wilson is considering whether the Jenkins case should be closed by simply forgetting to answer the last note, or by sending another communication, to clear away all evidences of hostility. Altho this government feels it was tricked in the Jenkins case, the consular agent is free on bail and that makes it impossible to continue demanding his release without getting into a technical debate, which might merge upon the ridiculous, it is felt. The Mexican oil situation, brought to a crucial stage by Carranza's recent action in preventing American companies from drilling new wells, is also before the president, it is understood, and action will be determined by him.
