The Geography of Reporting
Three-quarters (30/40) of the crimes included in this analysis were committed locally in Seattle, Washington. Four more cases came from the surrounding east coast region. Five are from the eastern United States (with a noted three cases from Washington, D.C.), and only one case was from out of the country. The cases from outside of Seattle were generally longer and more sensational than local cases and included stories that involved politicians, sprees of assault, and particularly violent crimes. The case from London does not fit this pattern, however, as the article is only 37 words long and is otherwise unremarkable. These out-of-state cases are equally distributed from 1900 to 1920.
