The Geography of Assault
The two dozen stories about assault published in June 1900 and June 1920 are evenly split between events in Kansas and events out of state. The number of out-of-state stories is almost the same in 1900 and 1920 (6 in 1900, 5 in 1920). The number of in-state stories varies considerably between the two years ( 9 in 1900, 2 in 1920).
Most of the out-of-state stories related either to crimes by African-Americans or involving celebrities. <Is this different from pattern of in-state stories> The furthest flung stories involved the celebrities, one from NYC, one from Paris, France. The stories involving African Americans came from states to the southeast of Kansas, with the exception of a report of a lynching in Duluth, Minn, but that came via a story in a newspaper in Memphis, Tenn. <how long are the stories>
