Description
CANNOT FIND CHIEF OF BOGUS COINERS
Officers Unable to Locate Men at Head of Gang
No trace has been had today of the men the Secret Service officers, and Detectives Messer and Howes, of the First precinct say are the brains of the gang of counterfeiters raided by the Detective Messer yesterday.
Charles Wright, the negro who the authorities declare they apprehended while in the very act of casting spurious coins in a plaster of Paris mold, in his home, 1416 Church street, yesterday morning, was brought to the Central Office today and photographed.
Wright will be taken before United States Commissioner Anson S. Taylor tomorrow for a preliminary hearing on a charge of counterfeiting.
The gang of which Wright is supposed to have been a member, operated at first in a shack on the Virginia short of the Potomac, but moved their headquarters to the Church street house some time ago.
The coins made by them from puter scraps, are good representations of twenty-five and fifty cent pieces.
