Counterfeiting in the Washington Times, 1903 & 1923

Legal Stages

Out of the 40 stories shown in this exhibit, 32 of them write about an arrest happening. This is, far and away, the most discussed stage of the legal system in The Washington Times. These types of articles usually mention the alleged offender’s name, where they were arrested (generally by United States Secret Service agents), and what kind of money they were counterfeiting.

Beyond that, there were two stories about simply the crime of counterfeiting, one about an alleged criminal on trial, and five about someone being sentenced because of an unsolved crime of counterfeiting. In the case of the unsolved crime, it was about a counterfeiting plot taking place in a Philadelphia prison. This article would get a follow-up a few months later once an arrest of one of the prison’s watchmen was arrested. This was not the only story that had multiple articles written about it, as there was also a two about a counterfeiter who was rearrested in connection to a murder.
