Description
ROBBED DEAD TO PLAY RACES. Clerk Charged With Stealing $20,000 at New York Morgue. NEW YORK, June 3 - Charged with the theft of $20,000, representing money taken from the pockets of unidentified dead at the city's morgue. William Becker, a clerk in the public administrator's office, was arrested last night and locked up in police headquarters. He was taken into custody while on his way to return some of the papers which the police say he confessed he had taken from the administrator's files. Becker admitted, the police say, that his first theft was in 1918, when he took $60 to play a "sure tip" on a horse race and lost. Other sums were taken and lost the same way, according to the police.
