- Judge Emory Makes Quick Work of the Arlington Woman and Her Husband. Mrs. Maud Arlington, the child-beater, was this morning sentenced by Judge Emory to one year in the county jail- the maximum sentence under the charge. Her husband, who protested that he had not witnessed the assault, got off with 10 months. Speedy work was made of the cases. The Arlingtons appeared in court about 9:30, and entered a plea of guilty. P.D. Hughes, appearing as counsel, offered words in their behalf, just sufficient to discharge the duty which befell him as a member of the bar, and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Faben presented a brief summary of the case, which concluded it. The Arlington woman, when asked by Judge Emory why sentence should not be imposed, arose and said she was being grossly persecuted, though confessing her brutal assault upon the child Lizzie. Next, John Arlington, her coward husband, got up and said that he had not witnessed the attack upon the unoffending little girl. The sentence imposed brought general satisfaction to not only the 50 odd neighbors of the guilty pair who were present at the trial, but to every one who knew the circumstances of the unusual case. After the Arlington woman had been safely housed in the tank, several former women neighbors followed her as far as the outer bars, with the intention of reviling her. The child-beater, however, quickly sought seclusion in a cell. Four of her companions in the tank are colored women, who assert in no mild terms that they will discipline their miserable fellow prisoner and make her human at least while she is among them.
