Description
ARREST OF WILLIAM BROWER. His Former Theft of Horse Which Chewed Tobacco. Major Sylvester has received Information from the authorities at Chambersburg, Pa., of the arrest on a charge of horse stealing of William Brower, an elderly man who was arrested in this city several years ago. Brower was taken into custody near Hancock, Md., last week. In 1894 he was arrested here by Detectives Horne and Boyd for the Pennsylvania authorities. At that time he was convicted of horse stealing and given a penitentiary sentence. The case attracted considerable attention at the time of the old man's arrest here, because the horse that he was charged with having stolen chewed tobacco. When the officers overhauled Brower he seemed very much surprised at the idea of being suspected of such an offense. "I don't like to suspect you," said one of the officers, "but your conduct is suspicious and I'll have to hold you." The prisoner told them he could prove that he owned the animal, and that it was the only pet he owned. He made the attempt to prove his claim by producing a plug of tobacco and giving it to the animal. Unfortunately for him, the officers have been advised that the animal had the tobacco habit. It is believed Brower was on his way to this city last week when he was overtaken at Hancock.
