Description
COUNTERFEITS BETTER THAN GENUINE COINS
Millions of Silver Pesetas Floated by Powerful Spanish Gang.
MADRID, March 13.—As a result of complaints recently made by Spanish bankers, government agents have discovered a gigantic counterfeiting scheme, backed by powerful influence. The spurious coin is chiefly silver, and has been distributed throughout Spain.
It is estimated that fully 12,000,000 pesetas ($2,230,000) are already in circulation. They were coined mainly in Seville.
The coins are perfectly made. A peculiar fact concerning them is that they contain more silver than the Spanish legal tender. Despite this, it is stated the operators have made an average of 30 per cent on their scheme.
