Stages of the legal system
Overall, throughout all 40 stories of murder there were 9 stories that were reported in the newspaper as crime, 18 that were reported during the trials, 4 stories that were arraignments, 4 stories about the arrests that occurred. 1 story was reported extralegal, and 8 stories that were during the sentencing.
In 1900 there were 5 stories of a murderous crime and similarly there were 4 stories of murderous crime in 1920. Trials were reported on just as much in 1900 as in 1920 (7 in each year) as well as arraignments and arrest with having 2 reports each in 1900 and 1920 for both. Then in 1900 there was one reported extralegal whereas 1920 saw none. In 1900 there were 3 newspaper stories during the sentencing phase of the legal system but then there were 5 in 1920. The only major change over time appears to be with sentencing with there being 2 more stories involving sentencing in 1920 than in 1900.
