Murder in the Evening World, 1900 & 1920

Gender

The majority of alleged murderers in my dataset are male, which is also the case for victims. While the amount of male murderers are thirty six out of forty, there is a closer margin when it comes to male victims. Male victims make up  twenty one out of forty cases, which means they are just barely the majority. This is consistent with one of the charts in "Murder in New York City, 1800-2000," Figure 3.3. However, this chart shows that there are roughly double the amount of male victims compared to female victims from 1900-1920. There are a total of four cases in my dataset where a woman is the alleged murderer, two of which where the woman has a male accomplice to the murder. The other two cases include women murdering their daughters. One mother murdered her adult daughter, a school teacher, where the other murdered her adolescent daughter, a twelve year old girl. I found that when a women is murdered,  especially an attractive young women, flowery language is used to describe her and her life. When a man is murdered he is defined by his job and accomplishments. I have attached an article that shows the flowery language used when discussing a female murder victim at this time.
