Murder in the Evening World, 1900 & 1920

Introduction

The newspaper I have decided to focus on for this project is "The Evening World, New York, N.Y." My dataset specifically focuses on murder in "The Evening World." I chose to focus on 1900 amd 1920 respectively.  When comparing the two years I found that the articles from 1900 are much more sensational than the articles from 1920. Similarly, the articles from 1920 are much more informative. I have also found that the issues in 1920 have less illustrations than the paper does in 1900. It is also apparent that there are more advertisements in 1920 than there were in 1900. The advertisements are also bigger in 1920. Despite being more informational when it comes to crimes in 1920, the paper features more opinion pieces and advertisements that could distract from the reporting of murders. I have also found that there is less international news in 1920 compared to 1900, but also less local news. A lot of murders reported in 1920 are in other states, while murders appearing in "The Evening World" in 1900 are largely local and also include international murders. I observed many things about the sex, race, and ages of the murderers and victims. I observed that murderers were largely male, with very few female alleged murderers. I also observed that victims were majority male, though there was a good amount of female victims aswell, making the margin closer. Twenty one out of forty alleged victims were male, making it the majority. I observed that most victims and murderers did not have their race specified in the paper. The small amount that did have their race or ethnicity specified were either Black or Italian. The data set shows my findings and the patterns I have found in the data. In the following pages I will be analyzing my data set by race, sex, and other factors.
