Location
My initial assessment, both in the introduction and the first assignment I did with this paper, is that there are more in state cases in 1900 than there are in 1920. This may be true when it comes to other crimes, but when it comes to murder it is not. Most murders from my dataset in 1920 are local to New York. In contrast, there is a somewhat even in state to out of state ratio for the murders reported in 1900. A notable out of state location is Frankfort, KY. There was a lieutenant who was assassinated in Frankfort, KY, and the trial was reported on multiple times in "The Evening World" paper. In 1920 there are a good amount of articles focusing on murders taking place in Brooklyn, New York. Some articles even specify the street the murder has taken place on or the street the alleged murderer lived on. There were two international stories. The first one took place in Calamba, Phillipines. This was most likely reported because the case involved Philipino soldiers murdering American soldiers, with the trial being held in the Phillipines. The other case is from Cork, Ireland, where an assassination took place of a "Lord Mayor." From my research I have found that as the paper went on, it started reporting on mostly local murders, though it did include some out of state international murders if they were of important persons or shocking. Some murder cases including trials were local, but did not specify which courthouse the trial was taking place in. In such cases, the data set will say "local, unspecified."
