Race
There are a total of seven articles in my data set that mention the race of the alleged murderer or alleged victim. Four of those cases mention the race of the alleged murderer, with two of the alleged murderers being black, one being a group of Philipino soldiers, and one being an Italian alleged murderer. Five out of the seven cases mention the race of the victim., one of which being "colored," two of which being Italian, one being American, and one being Irish. Only two cases mention both the race of the alleged murderers and the alleged victims. These two cases are, "Captured Filipinos to be Tried for Murder at Calamba" and "Italian who will die Monday has Shrieked Continuously." "Captured Filipinos to be Tried for Murder at Calamba" contains Philipino alleged murderers and a group of American soldiers as alleged victims. "Italian who will die Monday has Shrieked Continuously" reports about an Italian man who is to be put to death for murdering another Italian man, and who has been screaming continuously in his cell since recieving his death sentence. The case with a "colored" victim is a lynching. The name of the article is "Kimblern Already a Corpse When Colorado Avengers Hanged Him." This man was a murderer and was drug out of his cell by a mob and hung. Men drug him, naked, to be hung with a rope around his neck, as a mob of three thousand people followed behind. His race is not specified, as "colored" has been used to refer to multiple races historically. He allegedly assaulted and murdered two young girls at an orphanage and attempted to murder his wife. There were not as many black male murder victims reported in The Evening World as Figure 6.1 in Murder in New York City 1800-2000 would have you to expect.
