Description
John Washington, a negro working for the H, M. Hobble Grocery Company, on Commerce street, walked Into the county jail Saturday and gave himself up. A warrant had already been Issued charging him with the murder of Ed Swint, another negro. Washington declined to make a statement. As far as can be learned, the trouble started In the cellar of the grocery store when Washington, who tends the furnace, wished to approach It. his path being barred, it Is said, by other negroes, among them the deceased. Eye witnesses claim Washington hit the other negro over the head with a heavy iron poker, causing Swlnt's brains to exude as he lay upon the floor. Swlnt was taken to Hale’s infirmary and died shortly afterward. The preliminary hearing will take place In the court of common pleas Tuesday before Judge Winter Thorinrton.
