Murder in the Montgomery Advertiser, 1900 & 1920

Stage in the Legal System

Of the forty Cases the majority of them where at being reported on in the courts, meaning the stage they would be at would be trial, or sentencing/postsentecing. When a case was brought to the courts if it was not presented on a court docket list it would often have a lot of details about the crime, who the offender was, (race and gender) how the offence was committed, maybe even a brief history between the offender and victim. During the resting stage we often saw that there wasn't as much details other than they were arrested for the crime and would be charged with murder but not a lot of details would be provided. There where some outliers however like presidential pardons being handed out, pardons from the governor, a change in what the courts where charging the individual with due to lack of sufficient evidence, appeals being pursued, and lynchings by mobs.
