Race and Murder
Alabama in the 1900 - 1920 was a place of racial turmoil. Like many southern states at the end of the civil war they had to release their slaves (individuals they perceived as property and akin to cattle/ farm animals). This environment would lead to a lot of white on black murders and a few black on white murders.
White on black: murders that white americans committed on black americans were most commonly seen in the forms of mob justice were in a group of men would track down a black indvidual who they perceived as guilty and lynch him. Police officers would often allow these mobs to lynch black men before they get to trial.
Black on White: Murders that black americans committed on white americans were not seen very often but when they were it was in conjunction with another crime like robbery, or criminal assault.
White on white and Black on Black: crimes of murder when committed against members of the same race were often related to the domestic sphere, where husbands would kill wives, fathers would kill children, brothers would kill brothers, etc.
