Reporting Murders By Gender
Of the articles reporting on murders in this paper there were no recorded instances of female murderers, and few instances of female victims. The vast majority of the dataset, four of every five articles, reports on a man killing at least one other man. This would seem to indicate that the paper either had no female led murders to report, elected not to report the ones it could have, or that any female led murders failed to appear in search results for this paper due to faults made in scanning and transcribing this paper. Of note however is that over a quarter of the articles concerning out of state murders report on murders of women exclusively. The more shocking nature of a woman being murdered would again have helped this paper market itself to customers. This is further reenforced by the fact that all instances of out of state murders with exclusively female victims were printed on the front page.
All three of these in state murders or attempted murders of women were printed on the front page of their issues, including an issue which only states that no information was gained in an attempt to solve her murder. Gets New Trial is interesting for the fact that it is front page news even in 1911, as murder was beginning to spend less time as front-page news.
