Murder in the Virginia Gazette, 1900 - 1912

Reporting Murders By Race

In reporting murder by race, nearly one third of all articles do not make reference to the race of the alleged murderer nor the murder victim. Simultaneously, the paper contains no articles where it is specifically mentioned that white person killed another white person. From this it can be assumed that the previously mentioned third of the recorded articles resents the recorded instances of white perpetrators murdering white victims.  Of the 32 cases recorded, 3 involved white alleged offenders killing black victims, and three involved black alleged offenders killing white victims. The remaining half of the dataset is exclusively of black alleged offenders killing black victims. These articles make frequent references to the size of the black population which came to view the trial. This half of the dataset is also inflated to a degree, as these were mostly local murders which were therefore more likely to have multiple articles devoted to them. This can be most clearly seen in again referencing the Beech murder whose five articles contribute substantially to the size of this figure, in conjuction with other local murder cases which also recieved several articles.
