Introduction
The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer was a newspaper that ran from 1865 to 1903 and published in the town of Wheeling WV and the Ohio County area. It was published daily except for Sunday. The newspaper was republican leaning and often featured op-eds by republican officials and political news from this perspective. Democrats were a frequent target in political newstories.
In format, the paper was four pages each with usually six columns in 1880. Later in the 1900s, events and the going ons of the local people were included in their own section every Saturday or so. A variety of subjects were covered sports, current events, crime, etc. and came in various sizes.
The newspaper had a tendency to sensationalize crime stories, one story for instance reported on the death of a child but at the very end suggested murder was a possible motive. The paper would also write articles that covered updates in cases. The Warren Murder case, had two brief articles just to record the defendant speaking and the charge. With regards to race the paper was unusual, in that sometimes it would be sympathetic to the plight of blacks in America. Other times it might call for guilty black man to be hung.
