Rape in The Morning Appeal 1880 to 1900

Gender and Race 1880

The genders involved in the crime of rape reported in the Morning Appeal were the same for every report. There was a male offender and a female victim, this stems from the fact that the legislation at the time only considered women to be able to be raped. This goes along with the previous data done on this crime during this time period. The race of offenders and victims though varies.

The cases in the 1880 that involved race consist of six cases, two that are in state and four that are out of state. The two instate involve a young Native American girl, the chronologically first issue mentions rumors about her being raped but they are unsure if these allegations are true. The second issue verifies their guilt and mentions how her Native American community has decided they are going to kill two men that raped her. This helps to show us what is happening in the community in Carson City, and that since there are no black offenders in state could mean there are fewer Black people in the state.

The out of state cases in 1880 consists of three cases that involved Black men as offenders and one Chinese man as an offender. Each of the three cases involving Black men, they also involved their lynching. The race of the women raped was mentioned in two of the cases and can be assume in the last as a white woman. These statistics follow the research done that in this time period where Black men are assumed as offenders and vigilante justice is done by the community. The last story involving a Chinese man, who was discovered in the act of raping a young girl and was arrested and send to San Juan.
