Rape in The Morning Appeal 1880 to 1900

Gender and Race 1900

The case in the 1900 that involved race consist of seven case, only one out of state and the rest in state. There are three that involved Mexican’s or Spaniards. Three that involved Native Americans. Lastly one that involves a Black man. The one out of state involves a Mexican man that was shot for raping a young girl. His shooter was her father who was congratulated his good work.

The In-state stories that involved Mexicans are both about the rape of a Spanish women who raped in her home by two men. The cases are three days apart and the latter one mentions the breaking and entering that the two men had done and gave more details to the crime. The crimes that involved Native Americans. Two of the articles involved a case where a man was charged with murder but was convicted of rape of a young Native American girl. This led to a Nevada Supreme Court decision that exonerated him based on not being convicted of the crime he was indicted for. The Last case involved a young Native American girl who was raped by two men, but the case was dismissed for lack of evidence. Lastly the case of a Black man that raped a young girl was burned at the stake by the community for justice. In the Article they insisted it was unwritten law that the community has the responsibility to carry out.

Some of these cases go along with the trends found in this time period. Young girls being raped and the trend of vigilante justice. There are more occurrences of Native American and Mexican girls being raped and it being reported. The fact that these cases are also in state help to show us that over time more recognition to certain groups are getting more attention. There is also only one story about a Black raping a young girl and they state profusely that race had nothing to do with the burning. Whether this is true or not does not matter, the data speaks for itself, that Black men being reported for rape has shifted downward consistently.
