Rape Locations Reported in The Morning Appeal
This map shows that locations where the crime of rape was reported in The Morning Appeal throughout 1880 and 1900. There are 24 cases reported in state and 11 cases out of state, about a 1-3 ratio. The cases in the 1900's has 15 in state and 2 out of state. This differences greatly than the case in 1880 that have 9 in state and 9 out of state, an even amount both in an out of state.
The cases in state vary from longer detailed cases to smaller mentions of pardons or even rumors. The cases that are reported from out of state are cases that are astonishing, either things that are horrifying and startling. These stories from out of state probably made it into the newspaper for being eye catching. Several of the out of state cases mention black offenders and young white women as the victims as well. This could also be a reason for why these out of state articles made it into the paper.
