Rape in The Morning Appeal 1880 to 1900

The Morning Appeal

This online exhibition follows the crime of rape in the Morning Appeal ,Carson City's newspaper throughout the years 1880 and 1900, as well as going out a few years in both directions.

The Morning Appeal, the Carson City Nevada daily newspaper would publish an issue everyday except Mondays. This was a shorter newspaper, 2 large pages with issues front and back making for 4 whole pages of news. The main change over time was the 5 columns the newspaper has on each page in 1880 they are equally spaced. In the 1900 the last column is about double the size of the rest, making a large space for advertisements. These advertisements had large font, and some would have illustrations with them.

The crime of rape was only every reported on the second and third pages. The reports varied from small mentions in the miscellaneous column or pardon news from the jails, to large and detailed reports on rape committed and Nevada Supreme court decisions on rape cases. The shortest story is 15 words, about five men in Virginia that have been arrested of rape. The longest case is about the Nevada Supreme Court decision regarding a man that was arrested for murder but in court found guilty of rape. This was a sensational case that had many articles written about it during the 1900’s.
