Out-of-State Crimes
In 1880, there were nine crimes reported from out-of-state.
In 1900, five crimes came from out-of-state.
Among the out-of-state crimes in 1900, two of them were international cases with outlandish narratives that would’ve shocked the Appeal’s audience. One from France involving three men raping a servant girl and leaving her on a railroad track for her limbs to be severed and the other of the mother of a Cuban political figure in Madrid. The use of these articles in the paper fits the 20th century shift towards sensationalism rather than melodrama in newspapers during this period.
