Legal Stages in 1900s and 1920s
In 1900s, of the 20 cases I collected, 6 were under the legal stage of crime (meaning no offender was caught and charged), 5 under arrest, 5 under sentencing, 3 under arraignment, and 1 under trial that were reported in the Evening Star. In 1920s, 14 were under crime, 3 were under arrest, 2 were under sentencing, none were under arraignment, and 1 was under trial. This is another clear example of not only an increase of theft crimes from 1900s to 1920s, but also an increase of skilled thefts that leave their crime scenes unnoticed and unseen.
