Theft in the Evening Star, 1900 & 1920

Patterns of Theft in 1900

In the 1900s, most crimes were related to stealing livestock of horses and poultry with a few occasions of stolen rings and watches all of which occurred when the sun is down, and the visibility is low. Two prime examples would be from the article Reports Theft of a Horse where the male victim was surprised that someone stole his horse so late at night in his stable without setting off any noise from the horse itself (Reports Theft of a Horse, 1900), and another article Alleged Chicken Thief Captured was a colored man who was caught in the act of stealing chickens and turkeys by a patrol officer just before daybreak (Alleged Chicken Thief Captured, 1900).
