Description
Let me go back to the beginning. This gentleman goes down to his home in Suffolk, where there is a readjuster paper published, and where, under his own eye and inspiration, a foul slander is published with the heading, before described, of “Thieves and Robbers – Another Twenty-Thousand-Dollar Found in the Funders Ranks – The Second Auditor’s Office a Hotbed of Corruption,” and that the “committee has found many glaring frauds.” When Mr. Lovenstein and the clerks in the office denied any knowledge of these things, Mr. Cross, in the next issue of the Examiner, modifies his charge by saying “if these was error in the article, it was only in regard to the amount of coupons said to have been twice used,” and that the facts in the case will fully confirm the fullness and force of the editorial.
