Theft in the Daily Dispatch & Richmond Dispatch, 1900 & 1920

Map of Theft Locations Mentioned in the DD/RD

In the forty cases that were collected for this research, thirty of the cases were in various places within the state, while seven were out of state which were two in South Carolina, one in New Jersey, two in Pennsylvania, two in Washington DC, and two instances of the same case being mentioned in New York. And there was one case out of country in Canada. The interesting part of these findings in that with the exception of the Canada impersonation of a bank teller story, all of the other reported stories happen relatively nearby Virginia if not in Virginia. Although something strange to note is that North Carolina does not show up in these forty results. But given how only two cases from South Carolina appear, this can most likely be chalked up to the sample size as I am sure that there were documented thefts in North Caroline at the time, but perhaps this paper did not cover any stories from the brief moments the forty stories are from. Furthermore there are no stories from the lower south or western states in the country which is also interesting, but its harder to pinpoint a why for that observation as even the close states to the west of Virginia do not have stories.

Overall the narrative of theft reporting is not broken with these results. The lack of stories from the west of Virginia is strange, but overall the majority of the cases being in state in various places with strange and notable cases from out of state showing up in the paper certainly lines up with the narrative of the frequency and causes for theft to show up in the paper.
