The Language of Theft Reporting
The language used to report theft is not really strange when compared to modern equivalents. Some terms like house breaking have been replaced with unlawful or illegal entry, but most other terms are consistent. Terms like petty theft and kleptomania are still used today if not just a little more uncommon. If anything petty theft has seemingly phased out due to theft being more commonly used over petty theft, although I am pretty sure petty theft is still legally different from theft so it still holds actual meaning in todays world even if it is less common. As for kleptomania, it is just uncommon in general. Kleptomania as a term isn't really relevant to 99.9% of theft cases as usually people steal with some motive in mind whether that be over greed or desire. If anything kleptomania may just be a term that resulted from less care for understanding of motive (or in the case of the wicked servant story, just horrible parenting).
