Race of Victims and Alleged Offenders
Alleged Victims:
Looking now at the race of the alleged victims in the reported cases, the victim's race was only identified in four cases out of the 40 cases examined. In each case where it was identified, the alleged victim was black. In the remaining 36 cases, the race of the victim was either not defined or left ambiguous throughout the entire 20 years.
Alleged Offenders:
The race of the alleged offenders was identified in 19 of the 40 cases. Of these 19 cases, 22 of the alleged offenders who were identified were black, and four were identified as white. In the majority of cases, a race was not indicated. This could mean that the reader is meant to assume that the allaghed offender was white. However I did not consider this assumption as waranted due to the "Circuit Court" section of the paper never identifing the race of the alleged offenders. The only change over time that is notable in the reporting of race, is that after 1908, none of the cases directly identified a white alleged offender.
