A SUCCESSFUL CHASE.
The locomotive, like the bicycle, may
in time become an adjunct of the police
department. At any rate it demon
strated its ability last evening to aid
corpulent policemen chase would-be
murderers, and so deserves some
consideration. Dominico Caffone, a laborer, of 316
East One Hundred and Thirteenth
street, was, until recently, employed, by
William Bradley, a contractor, who is
excavating for buildings at West End
avenue and One Hundredth street. He
was laid off last week, and has been al
leging that he had not been fully paid.
Yesterday he made his usual demands
of Frank Bradley, who acts as paymas
ter for his father, and when the young
man paid no attention to him he went
at him for the purpose of committing
an assault. Bradley, thinking the Ital
ian had a knife, ran, and then Caffone
pulled a revolver and fired four wild
shots after him. Bradley escaped unhurt and Policeman Wood of the West
One Hundredth street police station,,
whose long years on the force have
made his form rotund, went after the
fleeing Italian.
Wood puffed and grunted in covering
about half as much ground as his fleet
looted quarry. Just as Wood was in a
condition bordering on apoplexy a loco
mobile rolled by.
"Here, officer," shouted the man at
the lever, "jump In and I'll catch that
fellow for you."
Wood dropped into-the vehicle,' and
away it went up Broadway at full
speed. The Italian was then six blocks
ahead and going easily. He hadn't
seen Wood get into the locomobile and
was just about to settle into a walk
when the vehicle rolled up and Wood
almost tumbled out on the astonished
fugitive.
The policeman walked his prisoner
back to the station, where a charge of
felonious assault was made against
him. The pistol, with four chambers
empty, was found in his pocket. New
