Description
Treatment of Asylum Patients Scored by Justice - TACOMA, April 21.- Justice of the Peace Frank A. Magill and Deputy Prosecutor James W. Seldon, scored the conduct of attendants at the western state hospital for the insane at Fort Steilacoom, when Mrs. Minnie Moore, a former attendant at the institution, was convicted of assault in the third degree on the person of Margaret Lundberg, an inmate, and fined $50 and costs. Mrs. Moore was charged with beating the patient with a piece of rubber hose, and offered a plea of self-defense. In summing up the testimony Justice Magill said that in his opinion the charge was more grievous than an ordinary assault, because the victim was a helpless patient and like a little child mentally. "The inmates of the institution are wards of the state," said Justice Magill. "They are there thru no fault of their own, and are invalids. As such they are entitled to the protection of the public." In imposing sentence Judge Magill commended the prompt action taken by the hospital authorities and held that there was no evidence to show that the patient had been struck in self defense.
