Description
Thieves were unusually active on Saturday night and Sunday morning in breaking into stores, but their thefts were rather a paltry nature. About 2 o’clock Sunday morning the front window of Mr. Thomas Streat’s cigar store, on Ninth Street was broken into and five hundred cigars were taken there from. Policeman brooks who was turning out lamps on his beat at the time encountered two negroes running at full speed up Main street. He captured one of them just in front of Christian and White’s; but as he could discover nothing wrong about him (his “pal” having evidently borne off the bounty) he finally released him. The robbing raving been subsequently reported, the enterprising young man who said “they were only running for exercise” was hunted up an arrested yesterday evening. His name is Randolph Turner. He will have a hearing before the police court this morning. Mr. J. S. Morre’s store, corner of Eighteenth and Main streets, was also entered, and four boxes of manufactured tobacco were stolen therefrom. Messrs. Charles Carley & Co. were also losers in a small way. Their store, 1411 Cary street. was entered, and $1.25 was all that rewarded the thieves.
